The Rise of Technology.
Cowland May 7th, 2007
The Girl threw (not dropped) her cell phone on the ground and broke it a few days ago. My phone stopped picking up digital service in Workland a few months ago because it’s old and my service provider dropped a frequency in favour of one with better penetration.
At the Bell Mobility store:
Salesguy: Is anyone helping you?
Me: No.
Salesguy: Oh, ok, what can I help you two with?
Me: She broke her phone and I was thinking about a new one for myself also.
Salesguy: Ok, lemme look up how old they are to see if you’ll get any rebate credits towards new phones…Hmm, The Girl’s is 25 months old..or was. Yours is–
Me, wondering why the guy is doing a double take at the screen: Yeah?
Salesguy: 83 months old!?! That’s really old! And we don’t even have the plan that you’re on anymore! Wow!
The other reps at the counter stop what they’re doing and come to look at the screen.
Salesguy, taking us over to the phone display: So this black Samsung one is a really good phone that you can get for just $10 because of your rebates. I have one.
The Girl: I like that other one there…the red one.
Salesguy: But this one is better.
The Girl: Does it come in red?
Salesguy: No.
The Girl: How about that other red one there, is that a good one?
Salesguy: No, but I might have a red faceplate for the black phone.
The Girl: Hmm. Maybe I’d consider it then, but I really prefer the other one because it’s all red…
And so after 2 hours, we were walking away from the store with a red phone for The Girl, and a black phone for me.
I’ve been busy playing with it. With the phone, SMS, and the mobile browser, I can update and check my Facebook stuff, check my email and check my blog subscriptions. Google has an impressive set of mobile tools. Their mobile search is geared towards what people with mobile phones would be searching for, their maps app loads onto my phone, and I can check news as well.
I’ve got to thank the girl for throwing her phone on the ground.
