Our Best Friends.

The stories of people leaving their dogs (and babies) in their cars in the sweltering heat while they go shopping have been rampant over here this Summer. This sort of thing always reminds me of “How Could You?”. It’s a piece that I’ve posted on the blog before.

I first heard of it on Classic Rock Q107′s website. The morning guy, John Derringer, tried to read it on air one day and had a rough, rough time with it. Q107 took the audio clip off their site a while back and I’ve never been able to find it until recently.

you would think that people would finally get it after hearing so many tragic horror stories on the news. complete ignorance and selfishness. there’s a circle in hell for chumps like that.

my other favorite – dogs tied to parking meters with rope. it happened a lot in NYC. one dog on the street was so messed up i called a cop over and was ready to untie him and take him home, then the dog’s owner came by and was like “WTF?”. i think the cops only just gave him a slap on the wrist, but the bystanders that were watching the whole thing started cursing him out, AND yelling at the cops! man, i love new yorkers…

I read PSAs (one an hour) during my overnight show on Magic 98.3. One of those PSAs is to remind pet owners that the inside of a parked car on a 78 degree day can bring a car’s temperature up to 90 in a shaded area with the window cracked, and over 160 degrees if that car is parked in the sun.

Sometimes I tell the audience about how one can actually bake cookies in a parked car (leave cookie dough on a baking sheet, leave baking sheet on your dashboard, and go to work. When you come out at the end of the day you will have fresh-baked cookies. I’ve done this, I know it works).

I then explain that if you can bake cookies in your car, your car should never, ever be a place to leave your pet, your child, or any living thing–even for a minute.

It upsets me that we have to remind people about simple things like that–common sense. But people do things without thinking and unfortunately, one of the most common things people do is get a pet without thinking through the responsibility that comes with it. Before I got a dog I researched breeds to see which one would be more compatible with my lifestyle, as I did not want to make some poor dog miserable being unable to go for long runs or daylong excursions in a park. I needed a dog that would be happy with a short walk, lots of cuddles, and playtime and most of all, one that would appreciate my maternal instinct–I opted for a dog once all of my kids decided they were too big for ol’ Mom. I need to mother someone.

A Yorkie fit the bill, and I can’t imagine how anyone can experience the love of a pet and continue to think of that pet as “just a dog.” My yorkie, Google, is as much a member of the family as I am.
