Threats From Above.

Cowland August 11th, 2007

When we take the birds outside it’s usually for short, closely supervised periods because of this guy.

We first noticed him one day doing very wide circles high above the neighbourhood. We had Tango outside with us on the back porch and I suppose Tango’s red stood out like blood against a sea of green forest and black road. The falcon’s circles steadily became tighter and tighter as they centered right above our heads.

Once we saw the falcon’s head come down and look more directly at us, we decided to retreat inside.

He now comes around regularly and checks our place out up close and personal.

i didn’t know you could take the birds out for walks. this guy sounds like the annoying bully at the playground. we all had one growing up.

We have hawks and the occasional turkey vulture by me. Last year we watched a hawk pick up a rabbit that was about as big as my yorkshire terrier.

Needless to say, we never let the dog out unaccompanied. He might, quite literally, become lunch.

Yikes. Especially with the handle on Google’s back…makes for easy pickings.

Google only wears that when he swimming, but yes–I’ve wondered if that handle wouldn’t make it easy for him to become victim to an air assault, as it were.

He’s pretty good about tagging along next to me when we’re around the yard though, and that seems to keep the hawks at bay. When I notice them starting to circle, I pick him up and we go inside–and he only goes outside on a leash during the late Autumn and early Springtime, when food is scarce and the hawks might become more daring out of hunger.
