This is Part 1 of likely an infinite number of points that I’ll relate from experience (some mistakes that I’ve made, others that I’ve seen made). The points are self explanatory. The consequences vary, but unfortunately for many of us dentists, our egos are too large to learn from them, and so we blame others for their behaviour that caused us to do the action in the first place.

Action: Throw instruments (the sharper the better) at your assistant because you are frustrated with the patient or the case.

do dentists really still do that kind of barbaric and uncivilized display of weakness of character? i thought it to be a thing of the past! goodness, you can sue someone for doing that to you, can’t you?

Yep, they do. Just ask The Girl, although her most recent episode was with a bagged instrument and she threw it back at the dentist.

If someone did it to me and the instrument or bag hit me, I would file assault charges, yes.

I had an assistant who walked out on the dentist when he threw an explorer at her. I heard that story back around 1999/2000.

one of the guys i work with downtown has/had a tendency to do that. he goes thru assistants like crazy, sometimes makes them cry. no one wants to work with him. unfortunately, he also happens to be a very excellent surgeon. why do the two always seem to go hand in hand?

come to think of it, most of the doctors i work with down there a bit loco. i was just accused the other day of “being too nice” to this one doctor’s patients when i do her recall checks on days she’s not there, because apparently some people switched providers. it just so happens that i work evenings and have more available and convenient hours, and the fact that i don’t bill $90 for a recall exam is a plus, too. but apparently, i am “jealous” of her and i did this “on purpose”. WTF???

You know my opinion about loco dentists. Fortunately for you, you just work with a handful…It’s different for specialists.

I’m surprised that your story surprises me.
