008901c88e1602e780906300a8c022.jpgYou know how I don’t usually do memes. Fragileheart tagged me on this one though. She also tagged Canucklehead. He agreed to do it so I’d feel left out if I didn’t.

The Rules:

  1. Each player starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves.
  2. People who are tagged, write a blog post about their own 8 random things, and post these rules.
  3. At the end of your post you need to tag 8 people and include their names.
  4. Don’t forget to leave them a comment and tell them they’ve been tagged, and to read your blog.

My 8 Random facts/habits:

  1. The book currently at my bedside is a textbook on endodontic microsurgery by Kim. The bookmark in it is a whole article on emergency management of restricted jaw opening. There’s nothing like having to choose whether to read the book you’re trying to read, or to read the bookmark instead.
  2. Interacting with people drains my energy. Interacting with nature rejuvenates me: I touched each of the new White Birches on our property, they were planted last Autumn, and welcomed them to their new home. They felt good.
  3. Edgar will be upset to hear that although everything I do at work is based on the scientific method, I live my life less strictly. The Silva Method (when it was less religious-based) provided me the tools to achieve what I have in life. I dabbled in NLP for a while back in dental school.
  4. I believe that extra-terrestrials exist and have been a member of SETI@Home for uncountable years.
  5. I believe in Karma.
  6. Our friend, Mark, recently said something that I will remember for the rest of my life — and that too many dentists have forgotten: The largest influence towards a positive treatment outcome is that the treater (healer) cares about his patient. Those that have followed my blog for a while know how I feel about dentists that care more about the money than the patient.
  7. I have been fingerprinted by the U.S. government.
  8. I tried to fail 80% of the students in the last endodontics course that I taught. I haven’t taught since.

I’ve tagged:

Haley, Debbie, Tam, Edgar, Laney, Kamala, Rudy, and Ginny. Sorry guys, but rules are rules.

Hey, I’ve already done this meme. However, I did the 7 Weird Things version, not 8.

Dunno what the rule is for that. I like memes, but I can’t repeat a post.

Hey, I learned something new — actually two things: The Silva Method and NLP.

Thanks for the tag. I’ll get to work on that meme.

Laney: By tagging we just mean that we’ve told someone that it’s their turn to do the meme and then pass it on…It’s nothing physical.

Rudy: Ooops, sorry, and I know I read it when you did it. Oh well, looks like you get off easy this time.

haley: looking forward to your post. Debbie is the hypnosis and NLP expert if you want more info on the application of NLP.

Tam: I do find NLP does allow for some rapid rapport-building. It can be used for the wrong purposes though…ie. people using it to seduce women. But is very useful in dentistry.

Awhh Rudy! You could write 8 NEW random things you know? Come ooonnnnn! I wanna learn about you!

Peri – thanks for doing the meme. NLP sounds cool. Would you ever consider going into it any further? Or is it the whole thing about dealing with people? lol Oh and cool: I believe in Karma too!

Um with regards to number 7: you mean to tell me there are dentists out there who actually care about the patients? :( Are any of them in Toronto? Because every single one I go to seems to want to do the world to my mouth.

Stuff I want to know more about: 1) tried to fail 80% of your students? Why?!?! 2) finger printed by the US government… how come?

    See now wasn’t that fun?

ooo ouch! why did you want to fail them all? I totally agree about the interacting with people thing though. I feel exactly the same way. I’m happiest doing my dentistry with some music on and no noisy relatives in the background.

fragile and jeanie: I’ve always thought psychology was cool stuff. Although you’re right about the people thing and NLP to some degree, I think I would have been happy doing some sort of counseling as a career. That’s one on one and less stressful that dentistry. And I do enjoy Dentistry. NLP and hypnosis were things that I used more for myself (towards myself) than for others.

If you’re looking for a down-to-earth dentist for a second opinion in Toronto, maybe we can hook you up with hormonal person who tries to speak english. I would go to her myself for work, and I know her socially.

I was fingerprinted by the U.S. when I started my 1-year residency after dental school (in the States). A large part of my responsibilities were within the children’s hospital. It was standard procedure then to fingerprint everyone who would be in contact with the kids in the hospital. For obvious reasons.

I was placed in charge of the endodontic course for the qualifing students at the dental school here some years ago. The qualifying program was basically where foreign-trained dentists trained to become Canadian dentists. The vast majority of people in my class just couldn’t “get it”. Too many ingrained ideas from their homeland and too much reliance on anecdotal evidence — they just didn’t want or couldn’t apply the proper concepts. On top of that some became argumentative with me: They’ve done hundreds of root canals in Russia, they’re twice my age, thus they are more of an expert at endo than I am…In the end they all graduated and are practising somewhere in Canada. I quit after a couple of attempts at teaching that course. I didn’t want to be the expert witness in court one day being questioned about the malpractice of one of my former students…

Oh my dear, you should have thought this through before adding me to your tag list. I have a reputation for being a smart aleck with these types of things. Now, I may not get real sassy on my site with it (then again I may), but you will for sure be the recipient of my twisted humor.

i just realized i don’t know 8 people who have a blog. so do i HAVE to tag 8 or can i tag as many as i can? and if i have to tag 8, do they have to be people i know? or can i just find random people on blogger? and if i don’t do 8 people, but let’s say only 3, does that mean i have to write only 3 random facts about me? sorry about all the questions but it’s my first meme and i wanna do it right lol!

Debbie: Do your worst. I’m ready for it!

Canuckle: Here’s a quote from one of your favourite movies, Brokeback Mounting — I wish I knew how to quit you.

Laney: I was wondering how long it would take you to figure that little fact out. I already thought of this for you…I wouldn’t tag people (bloggers) that you haven’t developed a history with because they probably won’t do it, your mileage might vary though. Tag bloggers that you know that you think might do it, then if you want, you can fill the rest of the list out with your facebook friends. Post your answers to your wall, then you can tag them on their walls. Memes are a bit of blog promotion so you’ll want to make sure that you put a link in your wall post to blogs that you’ve listed.

I’m reading up and listening to NLP things and I do find some anectdotal evidence it works… Even when I try it on patients/friends.

80%?! That’s really bad. The remaining 20% must be pretty good then, so you don’t teach anymore? Too bad my school doesn’t have an exchange programme arrangement with Canadian Unis, if not I’d like to go and have a look at the dental culture you guys have there.

I shall work on the memes tomorrow, I’ve got a patient with a mouth full of caries and teeth with Mobility 2/3 coming in tomorrow and the thought of it kinda disturbs me.

lol Laney you’re too cute! Since I beat Peri, I’m going to reply to your questions :P You can tag a little or as many as you like, but I think your way of tagging random people on blogger is MUCH more fun than only tagging 3. And sorry, but even if you only tag 3 people – you still need to tell us 8 random things about you! haha

Peri: lol Ok I can understand that. It’s sad, but that happens in a lot of professions and sometimes it’s valid, but sometimes it’s not valid and those times that it’s not valid has it professionals coming from other countries think that it’s always the case – whether they actually do know better or not. Boo-urns. Damn I should’ve just left the fingerprint story to my imagination. hehehe It was a more fun story in my head. lol

I know this sounds rather random and out of point but I just had to tell you that I had a patient who sorta vomited behind my rubber dam during my restorative work today and the first thought that came to my head was your blog post about a similar incident.

Its amazing, she retches when she has too much saliva pooling (understandable) and she retches when you touch her mouth with any saliva evacuators. I guess this calls for topical LA spray to the palate on her next visit.

Ed: No I don’t teach anymore. I moved away from the city and although I enjoy teaching, it’s too much of a hassle to fight with traffic to go to the university. I’ve even stopped giving lectures to study groups and dentists in my area. That’s because in the end dentists want to learn to do root canals so that they look like mine, or so that they can handle the exceptional cases and not have to refer them out. There’s only so much that you can learn from didactic instruction. I can’t teach experience. Being in canals all day long gives you a feel and an intuition for what you need to do. You develop an instinct when instruments are weakening, when you need to change to a different technique or approach, and still things don’t always work the way you want. A standard recipe for endo that will work invariably for every case is not possible. Dentists don’t want to hear this and there are lots of other specialists who say that their techniques can be used for every case out there…

I never could understand why people gag or vomit when their mouth fills with saliva. It’s not like they throw up when they drink water.

fragile: I’m actually enjoying memes a bit more. I’ve only done 2 ever (Rudy’s and yours) and they’ve both been fun.

Laney: Calculus didn’t say no when I told her you wanted to tag her. She didn’t say yes either…
